My mentor and 18 year biz partner, Jim Rohn would say “We all have two choices: We can make a living or we can design a life.”
Setting goals goes way past just trying to get things. Great goals have been well thought out and help led you toward the direction, lifestyle and purpose you desire.
Jim would say “If you go to work on your goals, your goals will go to work on you. If you go to work on your plan, your plan will go to work on you. Whatever good things we build end up building us.”
At the root of setting goals is desire. Without desire it is hard to achieve anything.
One simple exercise to help identify and fuel your desire is to make a list of reasons you want to do well. This helps you with your why. (list out as many in each group that you can think of)
- Material things. Houses, cars, tickets to games and concerts, hobbies, etc
- Family. Education for your kids, living in a safe neighborhood, vacations, legacy, etc.
- Giving back. Helping others, financial support of those in need, etc
- Seat at the table. What platforms and value do you need to create to attract those who inspire you and that you want to spend more time with.
- What you become. Jim would say “The ultimate reason for setting goals is to entice you to become the person it takes to achieve them.”
After you make your list then start thinking of what books you need to read, the people you need to get around, the skills you need to acquire and the activities that will help you achieve the things you desire.
One of the biggest influences on our ability to set and achieve goals is our peer group and associations. We tend to become like the people we spend time with.

Two final Jim Rohn quotes about goals and influence:
“Goals. There’s no telling what you can do when you get inspired by them. There’s no telling what you can do when you believe in them. And there’s no telling what will happen when you act upon them.”
“Don’t set your goals too low. If you don’t need much, you won’t become much.”
Hope to see you in Dallas next week for my Inner Circle Mastermind and in January for Robert Helms’ Create Your Future™ – Goals Setting Retreat and Workshop
