Look Up, Look Around, Then Back to Work!

I remember one day Jim Rohn and I were talking about prayer versus work, and the balance between the two. Jim always had a unique gift of marrying the natural with the spiritual.

As we talked, Jim then started to share an allegory about workers in a field (centuries ago). He said the guy has his head down, working the soil, removing the weeds and has a full day of labor ahead of himself. But on occasion, it is wise if he pauses and looks up to give thanks and ask for help, then looks around and checks to make sure there are no predators, then quickly gets back to to work.

I loved it. Not long after, Jim would on occasion even reference this from stage. It was always special to see how he would start toying with a concept and then develop it. Watching a genius at work!

Since the late 90’s I’ve always had a team of folks that would gather to pray for our families, our friends in need and the business. I believe this has been a powerful force in our success. At the same time none of us attended the same church, nor did we proselytize others as to our personal beliefs. We were respectful of differences and yet had common ground to come together and agree on common goals and purposes.

I have always run a fast-paced office with a heavy focus on activity (which Jim calls the miracle worker), yet was ever mindful of Jim’s great advice! Have your head down and focused on today’s work (with passion and focus), yet all the while taking a pause to look up, give thanks and ask for help, look around to make sure everything is safe, and then get back to work.
