In a book I published last year Lessons From Thought Leaders, I shared four insights that can take you from ordinary to extraordinary success.
1. Opportunity Precedes Personal Development
I believe that opportunity often precedes personal development. Sometimes we need to have something that gets us so excited that we decide to do all the things that will change our lives—that gets us up early, keeps us up late, motivates us to read the books, listen to the podcast, attend the seminars, have conversations, set goals, keep a journal, learn the skills and disciplines, etc.
That’s what happened to me when I found the seminar business and first heard Jim Rohn in 1990. I was inspired to not only become better, but to go all in and give 100% in a new direction that forever changed my life.

2. Everyone Starts at Zero
When starting anything new, you must remember this! Everyone starts at zero! Whoever your mentors are, realize that at one time, they were beginners. The key is to get started and to not compare. Run your race and you too will arrive one day.
3. Learn by Doing
I’ve always learned by doing. The more we can laser-focus on the exact thing we need to learn and the more we can find the best sources to help us, the quicker we can grow.
You can’t learn it all at once. You learn it one step at a time. I got into the seminar business and I had to learn to cold call, sell, and present. Later I got exclusive rights to book Jim Rohn for speaking and events, so I had to create a way to take him form 20 speaking dates to 100-plus times a year (and triple his fee). I had to then learn to create and market products and to negotiate and write contracts. I had to learn how to hire, train and manage a team. How to publish books, to build an online business, and eventually to sell a business.
You can’t learn it all at once or all in advance, you learn it over time as it unfolds.
4. What Do You Want to Be Known for in 3-5 Years?
A common exercise I often do (and take coaching clients and Inner Circle members through) is a very powerful centering question:
“Who do you want to be in three years and what do you want to be known and/or famous for?”
I truly believe everyone has unique gifts and the potential to be world-class in specific areas of their lives. But it requires clarity, focus, and commitment.
When you are clear on what you should and should not do, it will impact everything, from your daily to-do list to the books and seminars you decide to invest in and the people and mentors you choose to get around.
