I was on a mastermind call recently with my good friend and business colleague, Ryan Chamberlin, who is also in my upcoming book, Living on Purpose.
Ryan just won his third term in the Florida House of Representatives, and during our call, we talked about how important it is to live—and work—with purpose.
Our mastermind calls always have an intention. Whether we’re talking about his legislation to end property taxes in the state of Florida that he introduced 18 months ago, the book we’re about to release on that topic (more on that soon), an upcoming mastermind event we have planned, his reelection strategy, or something else—there’s always a specific focus and intention.
Having someone of Ryan’s caliber that I get to have multiple calls with each week is powerful. You don’t win elections without focus and intention! And I’ve noticed it’s caused me to become even more locked in and focused in all areas of my life.
To me, living on purpose means being awake to your life. Being intentional about where you are, what you’re doing, and why you’re doing it.
Because it’s incredibly easy to do the opposite.
Jim Rohn, my business partner, friend, and mentor of 18 years, used to say that all success is upstream, because the natural pull is always downstream, just like gravity.
There’s always another distraction. Another notification. Another problem. Another news story. Another person wanting your attention.
If we don’t intentionally decide where our focus goes, the world will decide for us.
Here are 5 ways you can intentionally live more on purpose:
1. Lock in your day before it begins.
I like to look at tomorrow the night before when I go to bed and ask: What are my main intentions for tomorrow?
Then I revisit it in the morning through gratitude, prayer, meditation, and journaling.
Don’t just start your day. Lock in.
2. Lock in before every important call, meeting, or activity.
Before I get on a coaching call, write an email, walk into a meeting, go to the gym to box, or step onto the tennis or pickleball court, I try to ask myself:
What is my intention? How focused can I be? How can I maximize the time, energy, effort—and ultimately the result?
It might take only 30 seconds, but that simple act of setting an intention can completely change how you show up and the results you have.
3. Be where you are.
Jim would say too many people are at work thinking about being home and then at home thinking about work. They are always at the wrong place!
Instead, wherever you are, be there.
Give yourself and that person, conversation, or activity your presence.
4. Protect your focus.
Social media, news, gossip, emails, texts—they’re all competing for your attention.
Not everything deserves it.
Living on purpose requires deciding what gets your attention and what doesn’t.
5. Choose people and environments that reinforce your intentions.
Who you spend time with influences what you think about, what you talk about, and ultimately what you pursue.
That’s one of the reasons my conversations with Ryan have been so valuable. Being around intentional people helps us become more intentional ourselves.
And remember, living on purpose doesn’t mean constantly working. Rest can be intentional. Fun can be intentional. Time with family and friends can be intentional. The goal isn’t to fill every minute.
The goal is to stop sleepwalking through the minutes that matter. Lock in your day. Lock in the moment. And live on purpose.
If living and working with greater intention is something you’re focused on right now, I have two ways we can work together.
