I recently heard famed investor Warren Buffett share a story that resonated so deeply with me that it immediately became a new filter for how I make decisions.
Buffett talked about Hall of Fame baseball player Ted Williams, arguably the greatest hitter who ever lived.
Ted once explained that if you divided the strike zone into 77 baseball-sized sections, not every strike was equal.
There was a small area where in the middle of the strike zone, if he swung, he would hit over .400—meaning he’d get a base hit over 40% of the time, an astonishing number.
Move just a little outside that sweet spot and his average dropped to around .350.
A little farther and it fell closer to .300.
On the extreme corners—even though they were still strikes—he might only hit .230.
Ted’s secret wasn’t swinging at everything. His greatness came from what he didn’t swing at. He waited for his pitch.
But the challenge in baseball is if the batter has two strikes, they have to swing at pitches that may not be in their sweet spot but that may still be strikes.
Then Buffett shared the insight that really brought it home for me.
In investing, there are no called strikes.
You can watch hundreds…even thousands…of opportunities go by without making a move.
You don’t have to swing unless it’s exactly the pitch you’re waiting for.
Wow!
Same is true in life, business, relationships, and health.
You don’t have to say yes just because an opportunity shows up.
You don’t have to accept every invitation.
You don’t have to pursue every business idea.
You don’t have to enter every relationship.
You can wait for the opportunities that truly fit who you are and where you want to go.
This especially hit home for me with investing. I’ve been in the stock market since 1999. I’ve experienced excitement. Fear. Bull markets. Bear markets. Recessions. And mad insanity (dot com).
I’ve learned one of the most valuable investing lessons is this: Patience often beats activity.
I may love a company…But if the stock is overpriced, I don’t have to buy it. I may see a stock that’s down 40%…But if it’s not a company I truly believe in or like, I don’t have to buy it either. Instead, I can patiently wait until one of my favorite companies goes on sale. And eventually they almost ALWAYS do!
That’s when you swing. And as Buffet said, swing BIG!
Sometimes we feel like we have to be doing something. But often our biggest problem isn’t a lack of opportunities… It’s having too many.
Every time you say “yes” to what looks like an opportunity, you’re automatically saying “no” to something else.
I think of when long time friend Darren Hardy was on my podcast and shared that much of his success comes from doing less. He shared one hard “No” can save you from a thousand weak “Yeses.”
When Steve Jobs returned to Apple in 1997, the company was struggling, one of the very first things he did was cut roughly 70% of the company’s bloated product line to eliminate customer confusion and internal distractions.
Instead of trying to do everything… Apple focused on doing fewer things exceptionally well. Great companies do this. Great investors do this. Great leaders do this.
Unlike baseball, life gives us the opportunity to wait. To be selective. To be disciplined. To wait for our pitch.
And when it comes…don’t hesitate. Swing big and with confidence.
Thank you, Warren Buffett, for such a powerful reminder.
