I’m coming off two epic days in San Diego, hosting a retreat with my mentor and long-time friend, the iconic Denis Waitley.
Denis turned 90 this year and is sharp as ever!
Over his career, Denis has worked with Olympic athletes, POWs, NASA astronauts, and hundreds of Fortune 500 companies.
One of the many powerful things Denis shared over the two days was six things all Olympians do. Observation, imitation, repetition, internalization, materialization, and realization.
These six things can also apply to each of our careers.
Olympians observe all the actions it will take to be successful. They imitate the best in their field. Through repetition they become good/great. Through internalization, it becomes second nature to them, which leads to materializing results and then the realization of all their desired outcomes.
Denis also talked about the ANTS. Right before Olympians perform, they get rid of the ANTS… automatic negative thoughts. They don’t focus on every little detail of their performance. They’re not thinking about all they will be doing when they’re going to the starting line to race. They have already done the work, the 10,000 hours.
They only focus on the outcomes they want, not the outcomes they don’t want.
Their dominant thought is where they are going. The athlete keeps the end of the race in their mind. Not, where do I put my foot? There is just one dominate thought: that they’ve already achieved before, in live competition or simulation.
In fact, simulation is just as important as game day. You already treated practice like it was opening night. So now, when it’s time to perform, you’re on autopilot.
