Ten years ago this week, I put on the 3-Day Brian Tracy Success Mastery Academy here in Dallas. It was the 20-year anniversary of when Brian and I first took that program across the country in 1996.
I first started promoting Brian in 1991. Our first event was in Atlanta with Og Mandino — 1,300 people. I went on to do multiple events with Brian and Jim Rohn before I launched Jim Rohn International in 1993.
The 1996 Success Mastery Academy tour was something truly special. While running Jim Rohn International and owner of Your Success Store, I negotiated with Brian Tracy to do six 2-day events. Together we came up with 16 module’s and did six live events across the country — later turned into a bestselling 16-module CD program. Many people, including Brian himself, called it his all-time best. We sold millions of sets. It’s something I’m still proud to have been part of.
Fast forward to January 2016. I was visiting Brian and his partner Eric Berman in San Diego, and it hit me: “Brian, it’s been 20 years since we launched the Success Mastery Academy.”
I got chills saying it.
He looked at me and said, “Kyle, we should do it again. I could do it tomorrow if you need me to.”
Four months later, we pulled it off — Brian Tracy, Darren Hardy (who attended one of the original 1996 events), Tom Ziglar, Colonel Tim Cole, Delatorro McNeal, Kim Somers Egelsee, Seth Mosley, Ron White, Jeanette Ortega, Vic Johnson, Erica De la Cruz as emcee, and more.
But here’s what made it possible — and the real lesson I want to share.
I had come out of retirement just two years earlier, encouraged by Darren Hardy and John Assaraf on a ski trip. I’d sold my companies in 2007 and had a 5 year non-compete. I’d sold my list of over a million people. Prior I’d had a team of twenty, now I had a just handful of team members I could call on. And when I talked to Brian about putting on this event, I was staring down a multi-six-figure commitment for hotel room guarantees, speaker fees, and three full days of production.
So before I signed anything, I ran a test. It’s a rule I’ve had for many years on how to test an offer before you fully commit.
4 Ways to Test an Offer
#1 – Must be an irresistible offer to a very warm market
#2 – Must have a deadline
#3 – Must have scarcity
#4 – Must have bonuses for the first 7-10 people to take immediate action
So I put together a simple one-page website with the offer. Then I got on a masterclass call with my newly formed Kyle Wilson Inner Circle group — my warmest market — invited Brian and a few of the speakers to join, and at the end I said: here’s the link, and anyone who signs up in the first 2 hours will get discounted VIP access, a reception with Brian, a reception with Darren, the best seating, and the best pricing.
I knew the number of sign-ups I would need that night before I would commit to doing the event. If my warmest market, at an irresistible price, didn’t respond, that would be my signal not to risk multiple six figures on hotels and speaker fees.
And thankfully they showed up. Enthusiastically!
From there, I ended up working with over 50 affiliates (including the speakers) to help promote the event. We built a leaderboard where they competed for a special dinner with Brian plus 40% on ticket sales (and recognition). I also marketed to my main email list and through social media.
And the 3-day event turned out to be one of the most memorable events I’ve ever been part of. To this day, people tell me it’s one of the best they’ve ever attended.
If you were at the 2016 event, reply and say hi. That event meant the world to me. Also, if you’d like the a list of 60+ takeaways from Brian, Darren, and all the speakers, just reply with the word SEND and I’ll get it to you.
