I just heard from a contact of mine who spent a lot of money buying “one of the greatest marketing systems of all time.” They are new to sales and they hoped this “magic pill” would solve all of their ills.
Of course, with their new “great” marketing system they are now more confused than ever. They have made zero progress and feel stuck.
I want to make this clear. I’ve said it for over 20 years — Marketing is simple. It is just about connecting the dots!
It’s not being tricky or manipulative. It’s finding the most efficient ways to connect your products and services with your prospects and customers.
It’s getting clear on what makes you unique (your secret sauce) and who your customer avatar is.
It’s being strategic with your focus, message, and end goals.
It’s knowing your marketplace and competition.
And it’s then finding the most strategic way to knock down the marketing dominoes.
Yes, there are tactics that you must use. I used many tactics to build a 1,000,000+ email list and to sell out big events before I sold my companies.
But tactics must never come ahead of the basic core principles of marketing.
These are core principles like having great products and services. Having great customer service. Being consistent. Building long-term relationships. Putting all your effort into things that will compound over time versus one-off activities.
Whether you’re offering products and services or creating an event, your email list, or a social media following, realize that it gets down to building a relationship and bringing value first.
I always say to never let a good, or even a great, tactic override the principles of marketing. Spamming people with direct messages or text messages may work at some level, but it is not how you build relationships. Some people buy into short-sided tactics and all they end up doing is churning through people instead of building a business that compounds. Often, they are always starting over having to sell to new people!
If you market correctly, eventually you will find yourself working primarily with returning customers and warm prospects, including referrals.
When it comes to new business, I always prefer warm prospects (referrals and people I’ve been building a relationship with) over converting cold traffic.
One of the most powerful ways to make this your reality is to always be building your network and audience, and then, talking to them. Bring value. Share ideas. Connect them to upcoming events and opportunities.
And occasionally, yes, you can talk about and offer your products and services when it is appropriate.
When you build your network and audience and talk to them through an email list, social media, blogs, podcasts, events, etc., you are being a farmer. You are investing in a future return based on bringing value and building relationships versus being a hunter that has to market one on one over and over again.
Never take the shortcut or buy into the magic pill of overnight results. Most of the time those don’t work.
Make your focus on connecting your marketing dots and being principled focused and watch your results compound over time!
