I coach a lot of entrepreneurs and speakers. And one thing I noticed is: They tend to be doing too many things that don’t really have an impact on their business and revenue.
Let me break it down like this.
I’ve believed and said for years, everything works. Putting business cards on windshields works…it just doesn’t work very well. So once you understand that everything works, then it all gets down to what works the BEST and learning to focus on ONLY those handful of things.
After my Inner Circle event in So Cal this past weekend, I met with one of my members. He shared multiple joint venture projects he had going. Most were not related to his core business and were unlikely to move the needle in any meaningful way (in my opinion).
Then he said he didn’t have time for some of the most basic marketing things I teach. These things are related to systems and building an audience that I teach in The Strategic Wheel.
The few things that I know from experience will grow his business he lacked time for and the things that most likely wouldn’t move the needle and were unpredictable, seemed easier and more desirable.
My biggest concern was my understanding of how important a person’s choices with their time, energy, and focus are. The decisions that you make along the way, all those things that you say YES to are also a NO for something else.
Part of achieving success is figuring out the highest possible outcome for the allocation of your resources.
Here’s an analogy. It comes from a conversation I had with long-time friend Darren Hardy on my podcast about the lion and the mouse.
A mouse can walk in front of a lion, and the lion will disregard it, even though it could kill the mouse and it would be nutrition. But, if a lion, one of the greatest killing machines nature has invented, went around chasing and killing mice all day, it would eventually die of malnutrition. A lion can only sustain its life and its pride’s life on antelope—big game. It takes a tremendous amount more energy and effort to capture and kill an antelope than it does a mouse. But when captured, an antelope can feed the lion and its pride for a week.
It’s the same thing in our lives. There are a lot of mice opportunities around us all the time. And even if a mouse opportunity provides a little bit of nutrition, a little bit of revenue, a little bit of reward, you will die of malnutrition over time. These are the trivial tasks and opportunities people pursue. Be the lion and only go after antelope, big game, big outcomes, big opportunities, things of high value. As Jim Rohn would say, “Don’t major in the minors.”
Marketing is about tactics and principles, and principles will win every time. Yet many entrepreneurs are drowning in tactics that aren’t moving the needle.
If this is you, what can be done? Get back to the core things that are working in your business.
Here’s a four-step exercise to do just that:
1. List five things you are currently doing that creates the biggest positive results in your current business model.
2. List 3-5 things that if you did them, could create equal or even bigger results.
3. List anything you do now that is taking your time, energy, and focus away from any of the needle-movers you listed in #1 and #2.
4. Prioritize your focus and efforts on the 3-5 things that are working best and/or you should be doing. Also ask are the activities under #1 and #2 part of your core business (one offs are often distractions), strategic (will knock the dominoes down), focused on your main customer avatar, includes your secret sauce, and is taking you closer to you long term goals. If not, refine down to the ones that check the most important boxes for you.
When you think strategically about all your efforts it will move you to a more long-term and sustainable success.
