Last week we talked about how powerful it is to get the important people in your life to talk.
As Kevin Eastman shares what makes someone talk is more important than knowing what makes them tick, because if they talk and you truly listen and hear them, that then starts to create connection.
It is also amazing what happens when you listen to yourself, plus connect the dots (something I teach in marketing 101).
Two weeks ago I attended the Summit on Sand Investor Retreat, an eight day conference at the Mahogany Bay Village in Belize hosted by my longtime friend and inner circle member, Robert Helms. My 6th year in a row to attend. It is truly an amazing event with amazing people! This was their 20th anniversary event and I was so honored to be ask to speak as a faculty member.
As I was preparing for my talk, I had an idea, I’ll call it a God whisper, of how I could raise $20k for charity.
The idea began as I was thinking of how to honor Bob Helms, who is affectionately known as The Godfather of Real Estate. Bob is also the father of Robert Helms.
Bob unfortunately passed away at the age of 85 two years ago. I was honored to have published Bob’s book Be in the Top 1%: A Real Estate Agent’s Guide to Getting Rich in the Investment Property a few years before his passing. His legacy and the knowledge he shared has translated beautifully through the Godfather Scholarship Fund to assist many young adults who attend the Summit with the desire to learn and grow in their investing careers.
I also wanted to support an additional charity, the Christian Development Center in Los Angeles that feeds, clothes, and provides housing for those in need. Run by Pastor Donald and Ethel Rucker, this was the charity of choice for the book launch profits from our most recent book, Think Big!
After running my idea by Robert Helms, who said immediately YES, you have the green light, I was able to use the last few minutes of my presentation to share my idea.
Simply, are there four people who would be interested in spending $5k for a day with me in Dallas. I would help them with their current marketing strategic wheel (as I’ve done for Darren Hardy, Robin Sharma and many others), plus they would also leave with some cool Jim Rohn resources, and we would cap the day off with a nice dinner all together (plus maybe a few special guest show up and join us). And of course, all the proceeds would go to these two charities.
Immediately after my talk, 8 people came rushing up to say yes, I’m in. So I ask if they would be okay that instead of one day we then turn it into 2 days with 8 people. They all enthusiastic said yes. Then 8 people turned into 12.
The goal for $20,000 became $60,000 to be split between two amazing charities that will bring so much benefit to the lives they serve. All this in just ten minutes time. Which, as I tell this story, still has me smiling.
This was a lesson for me on thinking outside the box, being open, having a spirit of gratitude for those that are in the trenches helping others, and remembering to recognize how blessed we are.
I was inspired to see how excited the people were who came up to support these charities. And in doing something good for others, they will be doing something good for themselves by making an investment that will also help them develop and grow.
Also it has expanded the thinking of the two charities we are supporting. Robert called it the Belize Miracle. The Godfather continues to impact the next generation!
It has been cool to watch how a single idea branched into something bigger than the original one I had. More people came up and volunteered to get involved, to offer their help and resources. The way this God whisper grew is amazing and an example of what can happen when you are open to all kinds of possibilities.
